REQUIREMENTS FOR U.S. CITIZENS TO OBTAIN VISA TO ENTER INDIA

There is a new requirement that is in effect immediately. This will apply to all citizenships and for any visa application. Photocopy of Birth Certificate

Employment Visa - Is now required of business travelers who may engage in employment activities or those who are an employee of an Indian company.

Tourist Visa

  • Submit your current valid and signed passport to TDS. It must not expire within 6 months and must have at least two blank visa pages. If you cannot meet these requirements, TDS can assist you in applying for additional pages.
  • 1 Application form, you must complete, print and sign the ONLINE visa form
  • 2 Passport-type photographs required
  • Airline or Travel agency itinerary showing departure from the USA
  • Photocopy of the applicant's birth Certificate
  • Jurisdiction: A clear photocopy of your driver's license, showing your residence in the jurisdiction of this Consulate - Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, North Dakota, South Dakota, and Wisconsin
  • Completed Cover Page and Credit Card Authorization forms (print from browser)
  • Special Re-Entry Instructions: Indian visas allow multiple entries into the country, however, there must be a gap of at least 2 months between two visits to the country on a Tourist Visa.
  • There should be a gap of at least 2 months between two separate visits to India on a Tourist Visa. For Tourist Visa holders who wish to visit India within 2 months of their last visit, an application for a Permit to Re-enter India is necessary. No Permit is needed if the visa holder is traveling to multiple countries on the same itinerary and the trip follows the itinerary exactly. The visa holder must carry a copy of the itinerary to show the Immigration Officer.
  • In order to apply for the Re-Entry permit you will need in addition to all requirement detailed above:
    • Visa application form:  (See Above)
    • Permit Support Letter: A letter is needed to support two points.
    • 1. The letter must highlight the urgency of the visit and the purpose of the visit must be for recreation/sightseeing, casual visit to meet friends and relatives/others (to be specified).
    • 2. The applicant may not be engaged in Business Activities/Employment or pursuing studies/research, etc. In such cases, registration would be required within 14 days of arrival.
  • Re-Entry Exemption Form: Completed and signed by the applicant
  • Additional fees to apply for the Re-Entry Permit do apply, these fees are in addition to the Visa Fees. (See Below).

Business Visa

  • Submit your current valid and signed passport to TDS. It must not expire within 6 months and must have at least two blank visa pages. If you cannot meet these requirements, TDS can assist you in applying for additional pages.
  • 1 Application form, you must complete, print and sign the ONLINE visa form
  • 2 Passport-type photographs required
  • Photocopy of the applicant's birth Certificate
  • Airline or Travel agency itinerary showing departure from the USA
  • Letter of Invitation from host company or Joint Venture partner in India required for 10 year business visa
  • Jurisdiction: A clear photocopy of your driver's license, showing your residence in the jurisdiction of this Consulate - Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, North Dakota, South Dakota, and Wisconsin
  • Completed Cover Page and Credit Card Authorization forms (print from browser)
  • A business letter of responsibility is required, to be typewritten on your company letterhead and addressed to:

    Indian Consulate General, Visa Section

    The letter must state all of the following
    • The nature of the business performed
    • The name and address of the business reference to be visited
    • The duration of intended stay in India
    • Must contain statement requesting visa validity required i.e., 1 year, 5 years or 10 years (should match application question #25)
    • Guarantee sufficient financial support for the visit
    • Guarantee return transportation to the USA.
    • The business letter should be signed by a company officer other than the applicant.
    ALSO, a letter of invitation from the sponsoring organization in India, typed on the organization's letterhead and stating all of the following:
    • The nature of the applicant's business;
    • The probable duration of stay in India;
    • Statement requesting visa validity required i.e. 1 year, 5 years or 10 years (should match application question #25);
    • Places and organizations to be visited in India;
    • Guarantee sufficient financial support for the visit.

Student Visa

  • Submit your current valid and signed passport to TDS. It must not expire within 6 months and must have at least two blank visa pages. If you cannot meet these requirements, TDS can assist you in applying for additional pages.
  • 1 Application form, you must complete, print and sign the ONLINE visa form
  • 2 Passport-type photographs required
  • Airline or Travel agency itinerary showing departure from the USA
  • Photocopy of the applicant's birth certificate
  • Admission Letter: A letter confirming admission from a recognized institution along with evidence of financial arrangements for stay in India.
  • Medical or Paramedical Courses: In case of admission in medical or paramedical courses in India, a letter of Approval or No objection certificate from the Ministry of Health, Government of India is required.
  • Engineering/Technical Graduate Courses: For admission to graduate or post-graduate courses in engineering/technical institutions in India, a letter of approval or a No objection certificate from the Ministry of Human Resources Development (Department of Education) is required.
  • Jurisdiction: A clear photocopy of your driver's license, showing your residence in the jurisdiction of this Consulate - Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, North Dakota, South Dakota, and Wisconsin

        A money order is required by the Embassy of India. The money order will be obtained by TDS, the consular fee above includes a $4 money order fee.

        A money order is required by the Embassy of India. The money order will be obtained by TDS, the consular fee above includes a $4 money order fee.

  • Please note that non-US citizens who are short term visa holders will be charged a reference fee of $20.00 in addition to the total fees listed above. US Green card holders and those who have a US long term visa (3 years or more) will not be charged the reference fee.
  • For Non-US born applicants that do not have their birth certificate, provide a copy of a document issued by Government authorities. This document could be an old (not current) passport or a school leaving certificate etc., provided it shows personal particulars like name, date of birth, parents names, and nationality
  • Include credit card authorization, a check or money order payable to "Travel Document Systems, Inc." for TDS Handling Fee, Embassy Consular Fee, and return Shipping Fee.

Tourist Visa Notes

  • Indian visas allow multiple entries into the country, however, there must be a gap of at least 2 months between two visits to the country on a Tourist Visa.
  • In order to seek permission to enter India multiple times within two months, the application must highlight the urgency in visiting India. The specific purpose of visit must be clearly indicated, for example: for recreation/sight seeing, casual visit to meet friends and relatives/others (to be specified), and not for engagement in business activities, employment or pursuing studies, research, etc.
  • Letter of Request: Applicants seeking permission for multiple entries within a two month period must include a letter addressed to the appropriate Indian Consulate seeking permission and explaining the need to visit India multiple times within two months. The letter should also provide a detailed explanation of the purpose of journey and expected dates of travel.
  • Permission is granted at the discretion of the consulate. If granted, travelers intending to return to India for a second visit within two months must register at the Foreigners Regional Registration Office (FFRO) within 14 days of arrival in India.

Business Visa Notes

  • The Indian Government is being extremely selective in issing 5/10 year visa. If you wish to apply for a 5/10 visa delays in visa processing times can occur.
  • If you wish to apply for a 5/10 visa delays in visa processing times can occur. If you are not granted a 5/10 year a 1 year visa will normaly to issued,
  • The difference in Consular fees is not refunded by the Embassy of India and therefore cannot be refunded by TDS.

Non-US Citizen Business Visa Notes

  • Indian Government strongly recommends applying for a 1 year visa, delays can occur when applying for a 5 year visa.

Conference Visa Notes

  • Visas for international conferences, or on certain subjects, may be issued to delegates if they are able to produce an invitation to a conference/seminar/workshop being organized in india by a Ministry or Department of the Government of India, State Governments, Public Sector Undertakings, Central Educational Institutions, Public Funded University or an organization owned and controlled by the Government of India or State Government, UN or its specialized agencies and reputed NGOs.
  • Ministry of Home Affairs Clearance: A clearance letter from the Ministry of Home Afairs is required
  • Ministry of External Affairs Clearance: A clearance letter from the Ministry of External Affairs is required
  • State Government/UT Clearance: A clearance letter from the State Government/Union Territories is required.
  • Nodal Ministry Clearance: A clearance letter from the Ministry that holds jurisdiction over the conference is required. Example, an education conference needs a clearance letter from the Ministry of Education.
  • In the case that the conference/seminar/workshop is being organized in India by private companies the applicant should apply for the shortest duration Business visa available. If approved, a 3 month single entry Business visa will be granted.
