Document Requirements

These requirements are applicable for US Citizens applying for a China Non-Business visa in San Francisco

You will need to upload a copy of the information page of your passport and a photo as well as supporting documents below requested at the time you complete your Chinese Online Visa Application (COVA). Once your COVA has been submitted in their system and reviewed you will receive a bar coded approval notice which you will need to send to us along with your physical passport.

Please send TDS your current valid and signed passport, plus one photocopy of the vital information page. It must not expire within 6 months and must have at least one blank visa page. Foreign Embassies cannot issue a visa on a page not labeled as a Visa page. Amendment and Endorsement pages in the back of the passport cannot be used for issuance of a visa.
A visa cannot be stamped on a page even if only one Small Stamp is on the visa page. If you do not have any blank visa pages in your passport, TDS can assist you in applying for additional pages. If your passport expires within 6 months, you must renew your passport and then we will secure your visa with the new passport.

New Requirement Beginning Jan 2017, applicants who have passports issued January 1st 2015 or later, will be required to submit their original previous passport as well.  If you do not have your previous original passport, you must state a reason why you cannot provide it under 3.7 on the application. Common responses are i lost previous passport or this is my first passport.  Secondly, if either of these passports contain a stamp/visa from Russia, Turkey, Jordan, or Israel, you will be required to submit a letter detailing the exact dates you were in those countries and the reason for visiting.  Please note that the Consulate may require additional documents and or a personal appearance at their discretion.

If your passport expires between 6-12 months at date of submission for your visa you are only eligible to apply for a single or double entry visa, you are not eligible for the 1-2 or 10 year multiple entry visa.
Please complete and sign the Acknowledgment Statement required by the Chinese Consulate.

A business letter of responsibility (sample) is required, to be typewritten on your company letterhead and addressed to:

Consulate of China, Visa Section, San Francisco, CA
The letter must explain all of the following:
Nature of business to be performed
Name and address of reference to be visited
Your job title and description
This letter should request Multiple Entries visa if required
Guarantee of return transportation and sufficient funds for the visit
The letter should be signed by an officer of the company other than the applicant.

The Chinese Consulate requires that one of the following two items be submitted in addition to the Business Letter of Responsibility (Above) from your company in the United States.


A letter of invitation from the organization to be visited in China, including all of the following:
Name, gender, nationality, date of birth and passport number of the applicant.
Purpose of visit.
What city and province the applicant plans to visit.
Signature of the inviting contact in China and company seal.  (AKA "Chop"). Faxes/Scans accepted.
Date of entry and exit from China.
Who will provide financial support in China for the duration of stay.
Full name of the company in China which invited the applicant.
Full name, job title, address, phone and fax numbers of the contact company in China.

OR an invitation known as a "Visa Notification Form" from the PRC Ministry of Foreign Affairs or from China Foreign Economic Relations and Trade Commission or from any authorized government entity. This invitation should be arranged by your host in China and may be emailed or faxed to you.


Proof of residential address in the United States; clear digital copy of applicant drivers license or state issued photo ID must be uploaded to your COVA. Address on the Drivers License must match the address on the visa application form.

Applicants must upload a copy of their last visa to China. If the visa is still valid you must submit the old passport with the old visa in it, or if not available then you must tick the appropriate box on the Visa Application Statement.

 

Complete and sign one Affidavit Letter giving the exact dates and purpose(s) of every trip made to Turkey, Kazakhstan or Pakistan after January 1st 2015. Dates MUST match all entry and exit stamps in the traveler's passport and all trips mentioned on the visa application form.

Please include a signed Letter of Explanation explaining the purpose of the journey to Turkey, Kazakhstan or Pakistan.

Your passport must be signed to apply for a Chinese Visa, please be sure to sign the signature section on your passport before sending to Travel Document Systems.

After you have completed the form and necessary uploads submit it online in the Chinese sytem for review. If approved you will receive a bar coded approval notice within a few days which you will need to print and send to us along with your physical passport. If thee are any interim deficiencies you will receive an email asking you to make adjustments to your COVA and/or requuesting upload of additional documents.

Residents of Colorado, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Wisconsin, Nebraska, North and South Dakota please select Chicago as your processing center when you open the Chinese application form.

Please be sure that all information is complete and accurate before you click the "Submit" button. Once the application is submitted you cannot make any changes unless you receivean email asking you to make changes. You can click the Save button which will save your application for 30 days, to return to your application click the "Retrieve an Application" button, you will need the application ID number and your Passport/Travel Document Number.

Travel Documents will make the appointment at the Embassy/Consulate once we have received all your documents, you do NOT need to go to the Embassy/Consulate.

You must upload scan of information page of previous Chinese passports or previous Chinese visas (applicable to foreign citizens, those who were Chinese citizens and have obtained foreign citizenship) as well as Naturalization Certificate.

If you are applying for a Chinese visa for the first time, you should provide your previous Chinese passport held.
If you have obtained Chinese visas before and want to apply for a Chinese visa with a renewed foreign passport that does not contain any Chinese visas you should upload a copy of the previous passport's data page and the photo page if it is separate, as well as the previous Chinese visa page.
If your name on the current passport differs from that on the previous one, you must provide an official document of the name change.

Documentation for a child of Chinese descent born in the U.S.
A child with Chinese descent born in the U.S. applying for a visa for the first time should upload a copy of their Certificate of Birth as well as either parents' passport data page or US Alien Registry (Green) card or other non-US residency permit. (A child with Chinese descent born in the US applying for a visa who has had a Chinese visa before may be able to upload a copy of their former visa in lieu of their Birth Certificate or parents' passport data page and/or residency permit.

The China business visa is usually valid a single entry for three months from date of issue, for length of stay not to exceed 30-60 days from the date of entry. Please Note - Chinese visas use the yy/mm/dd format.


Short term Study or Internship applicants receive a Business "F" visa.   Long term Study or Internship applicants (Over 180 days) receive a Study "X" visa.

Two year business visa applicants must have two consecutive prior one year visas or a prior two year visa from the San Francisco Consulate and a business letter that specifies a two year visa is required.
